Answer: Graphic tools help to create support for interaction and sharing, which is key to learning new concepts. Also, graphic tools create a cleaner, more professional look which is easier to see and understand. They are very efficient and increase productivity. Students can also use these tools to help them independently explore and share with fellow learners.
Question 2: In Phase 2 of the Technology Integration Planning Model (TIP), teachers focus on the outcomes expected as a result of integrating technology into instruction. List four methods teachers can use to assess the outcomes of the plan.
Answer: 1. Use written tests to assess skill achievement outcomes. Examples- essay exams, mult. choice, true/false, matching
2. Use evaluation criteria checklists to assess complex tasks or products. Teachers should give students a set of criteria that specify requirements.
3. Use observation instruments to measure frequency of behaviors. Example- if teachers wanted to see an increase in student's use of scienctific language, they could create a chart to keep track of this and use on a daily basis.
4. Use rubrics to assess complex tasks or products. Rubrics fulfill the same role as evaluation criteria checklists and are sometimes used in addition to them.
Question 3: Describe two advantages of required school and district policies such as policies regarding Internet use, legal and ethical use, and equity.
Answer: First, having such policies prevents the school district and the educators from liability charges against them. It also helps protect students from online predators, chat rooms, and inappropriate material. Second, they help instill the idea that school is a place to learn, regardless of race or gender. Placing limitation on internet use also helps instill the idea that the internet is for learning purposes only, and not for gaming or chatting.

Chapter 1 self assessment answers
Question 1:Name two advances or developments that have occurred in technology since the 1970s that you feel have had significant effects on education, and explain why these technological changes had such effects.
Answer:The two greatest advances since the 1970's, in my opinion, would have to be the creation of microcomputers and the beginning era of internet use. Small, individual computers made it easier for teachers to teach their classes by offering different softwares and integrated learning systems which contained a predeveloped curriculum with assisted teachers with knowing the required standards. The first microcomputers entered the classroom in 1977.
The internet era has to be, by far, the greatest advance in education yet. Being able to access information from all over the world has enabled us to become more educated in world affairs, keep track of the economy, and even play games. The internet has helped students be able to create more in-depth and up to date research papers in half the time. If student wants to know what the weather is going to be in an hour, they can access it through the internet. Teachers can access new and exciting ideas and information without having to look through hundreds of textbook pages. Teachers also have an easier time contacting fellow co-workers, administration, and even parents and guardians of their students.
Between the introduction of the microcomputer into the classroom and the creation of the world wide web, technology has greatly increased both the learning and teaching potentials of both students and teachers. Both of the technological advances have provided easier and more effective education patterns.
Question 2: Discuss one emerging trend in technology and the effect it could have on classrooms and schools.
Answer: The radio frequency identification, aka RFID, is currently an emerging trend in technology. It is a computer chip and an electronic monitoring system that can track the location of the chip and update information on to it. It has already been introduced in some department stores to monitor inventory and prevent stealing. This identification system will hopefully help to increase school security and help to keep track of library resources.
However, there are many more trends that will contribute directly to teaching and learning. New developments in portable devices allow teachers and students more flexibility in their learning environments. Some examples of these devices are the tablet PC and the palm, a handheld computer. These developments will make it easier for each student to have a computer and they will be able to type and research from almost anywhere. This technology will also assist teachers in continuously monitoring and assessing their students.

Answer:
Portfolio's are a collection of student's work products over time. It is arranged so they and others can see how their skills have developed and progressed. Portfolio's are seen as a better way of seeing how well a student is doing rather than the old way of using tests. Portfolio's take time and patience, which is a good thing for many people to learn to control. It also requires that you hold on to all the previous work you have completed. Instead of just throwing out old projects and research papers, you hang on to them to use later. This is a very positive thing in many cases. Most people would enjoy looking back through all of their accomplishments during their education. I know my portfolio will give me more self confidence. I know it will take some time to complete but it will be well worth having in the future for job interviews.
